Introduction
My name is Abdullahi Azeez, a 400 level student of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology(FET), Department of Civil Engineering. I am undertaking my IT at Oyo State Ministry of Works and Transport, Ibadan.
How did you get there, and what work do you do? Was it easy getting placement there? Suggest other places where people in your department can train.
I got to know about the place through my brother. He linked me up with some other people who made the application successful. From my experience, I can't say it was easy getting a placement there. The only thing I did before I got my placement was to go submit a letter at the Ministry.
For the first few weeks, I was placed in the highway engineering laboratory which is responsible for the conduction of standard tests for asphalt pavement design and paving materials. After that, I got into fieldwork.
Civil Engineering students can apply for their industrial training in construction companies, the State Ministry of Works and also in most engineering industries.
What is the most interesting thing about your place of work?
The most interesting thing about my workplace is that I get to meet people who can help me in moving forward in my career and connect with them. In short, it's all about the connections.
What is the most surprising experience you have had at your place of work?
The most surprising moment I've had was the first week I was placed in the Highway Laboratory. We did practically nothing for a whole week. Meanwhile, I was ready to work.
What have you learned other than things related to academics?
I have mostly learnt how to live and survive as a man. It has been a really eye-opening experience.
From your brief experience, which is easier? Work or School?
I don't think one is easier than the other. But the two have been working together to build me up.
Has your IT program contributed to your academic and personal life?
Yes, it has helped me to be more hardworking. I now know the importance of waking up early unlike when we complain about early classes in school.
Oya gist us🤗🤗(tell us random things)
Most times I am asked questions about things they expect me to know as a 400 level student. But, I usually do not have answers. I got to know that as a student you should not limit yourself to what is taught in school. To sum it all up, the programme has been tough and stressful, but also fun and enlightening.
