Introduction
My name is Abimbola Idowu, a 400 level student from the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Department of Applied Microbiology. I am undertaking my IT at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Microbiology Unit, Ile ife.
How did you get there, and what works do you do? Was it easy getting placement there? Suggest other places where people in your department can train.
I got to know OAUTH via my aunt. I submitted my IT placement letter in April, 2021, returned to Ife to sign my paper on May 31, 2021 and resumed in August.
I work in the laboratory and we conduct malaria parasite test, carry out gram staining, and prepare media amoung other things.
As a microbiology student we can undergo IT in industries, like food industry, pharmathetical industry, laboratories, petroleum company. We can work in universites, polytechnics or in the laboratory as a microbiology lab attendant or with a researcher.
Interesting things about your workplace.
The interesting thing is that everyday, I get to see equipment I have longed to see and use. I can now use a microscope and can identify gram negative and gram positive stains.
What challenges do you face at your workplace?
I sometimes have issues with practical. This is because we did not do a lot of praticals in school. It takes time for me to know some things, unlike other students I met there.
What have you learned other than things related to academics?
Since I have started my industrial training here, I have learned more about moral and dressing
From your brief experience, which is easier? Work or School?
School or work?I will say work because here is purely pratical unlike school which require attending lectures, reading and writing exam. Even though I still read, it is not like school works, there are a lot of things I have learned which I can't learn in school and my work allows me to do my fashion business unlike school activities.
Has your IT program contributed to your academic and personal life?
Academically, it has enlightened me more on the theory aspect which I have learned in school. I will say I read more even than in school because my supervisor will always ask questions. This prompts me to do some research online about things I have been taught to know more.
Oya gist us🤗🤗(tell us random things)
My supervisor is a consultant who graduated from LAUTECH, Department of Medicine and Surgery. We talk about any and everything including my plans for when I graduate. He often advise me on academics and the fact that I should priotise learning over making money during my training. I was shocked the day he gave marriage advice too.
Staying with my grandma is interesting and I have also improved my cooking skills.
