My Industrial Training Story 2021:Adeosun Ademola

Introduction

I am Adeosun, Ademola Emmanuel, a 400L student of Pure and Applied Biology, Microbiology option. I am currently undergoing my six months compulsory industrial training or SIWES at Abidiodan Primary Health Care Centre, Ibadan, Oyo State.

How did you get there, and what works do you do? Was it easy getting placement there? Suggest other places where people in your department can train.

I got to know about this place through referral from a family friend. I am learning about various microbiology concepts such as medical microbiology, haematology, and phlebotomy. We do a lot of other things, but I don't want to go into details as it may bore you.

Getting placement these days in Nigeria is equivalent to getting jobs. It is hard. You know how it's hard to get jobs out there? It's the same as getting placement! I tried different places before settling down here in ibadan.

Well, I will be frank with you, there are many places to do IT in my field — Microbiology—but it is competitive and it's not easy to get acceptance. Here are a few suggested places: Primary health care centres which can be alternative to teaching hospitals, any research institutes, IITA, (Molecular Biology Lab probably), pharmaceutical industries in the production line, Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), breweries, Fast-moving Consumable Goods Companies (FMCG) where one can be trained as QC/QA officer, oil company…lol .. It's not too early to gain experience in oil spillage cleaning…and other federal government parastatal. I guessed I should stop here.

What was the first shocking experience you had at your place of work? ?

I don't think I experienced any shock because I knew all what can be done here before coming.

What is the most interesting thing about your place of work?

Interesting things? Same as above, but let's say people here are accommodating and friendly at least to students.

What challenges do you face at your workplace?

Challenges at work would be the traffic I experienced everyday before coming down here, and maybe handling patients specimens.

What have you learned other than things related to academics?

I learnt more about report giving and documenting, team work, and interpersonal skills.

From your brief experience, which is easier? Work or School?

Schooling is hard but I think practicing the course and working is harder.

Has your IT program contributed to your academic and personal life?

I would say this program has contributed to my personal life than academics because I am exposed to real life working environment.
