Introduction
My name is Akanmu Peter, also known as Optimist. I am a 400 level student of the Department of Civil Engineering, LAUTECH. I am undergoing my IT at BOT Construction.
How did you get there, and what works do you do? Was it easy getting placement there? Suggest other places where people in your department can train.
Securing IT placement is not easy!! Before I was accepted here, I sent a copy of my IT letter to 5 different companies — Intecon, TRECON, LEKAD, Segun Labiran — but none of them gave a positive response. At a point, I was very angry when I discovered that my friends had started their IT but I was yet to start.
Despite all these, I still had hope that God will pave way for me.
About three weeks after my friends started IT, I called a brother of mine and he linked me up with someone with whom I'm currently undergoing my industrial training.
My boss is a lady. She is friendly and treats us all equally, both male and female.
However, going to work from Monday to Saturday can be really stressful. We only get Sunday to worship and relax.
Here, we conceive an idea from a client, bring out its structural plans, roof plans, operate the structure and maintain the structure for durability.
What was the first shock you experienced at your IT place?
The first shock I experienced was the issue of payment. I had been looking forward to a company that will pay a huge sum. At least I'll have something to boast of monetarily after the program, but the opposite is the case.
Interesting things about the place?
I enjoy the company of my co IT workers as we relate like brothers and sisters. Sometimes our boss cooks and we all eat together from the same plate.
What are the challenges you face every day since you started your IT?
The only challenge I face is transportation. The amount she pays per month is far below the cost of transportation monthly.
What have you learned other than things related to academics?
I have gained a lot from her and that includes how to conceive clue from client and draw plans, designing flow chat (the way rooms relate with each other)roof plans and types, site supervision, how to operate structures, and more.
I have also improved my communication skills and learnt how to define relationship with people and set standard.
From your brief experience, which is easier? Work or School?
Work is far better than school o. At work, you are exposed to the real world. Theories without practical is nonsense. Work gives enlightenment about your career and exposes you to practicals.
Has your IT program contributed to your academic and personal life?
IT program has contributed a lot to my academic and personal life. I am blessed to have my boss as a guide. Blessed be the day I first met her.
